11 years ago today, I was nervously standing at O’Hare waiting for Steve to get off a plane. We’d known each other online for a few months, and even had plans to meet with each other when I went to Boston for a wedding in September. We were both up late on IRC and decided, on the spur of the moment, that we needed to meet each other in person. Steve booked a flight and headed to the airport. I gassed up the car and drove to Chicago to meet his plane 1.
It seemed like a good idea at the time. Crazy and Insane and OMG, What am I thinking? A total adrenaline filled rush. Hey, what’s the worse that can happen?
I can say with complete confidence, 11 years later, that it was a very good idea. I met the love of my life that day. My lover. My partner. My friend. He is, without a doubt, the best thing ever to come into my life.
I love you, Steve. Happy anniversary.
1The responsible bit of me has to tell everyone not to try this at home. Really. It’s dangerous, you never know who is on the Internet and you can meet all sorts of people who have bad intentions. You could get hurt or worse.
