There is nothing quite as good as comfort food. And I've so needed it recently. Tonight was meaty pasta sauce. One of its final destinations is lasagna, but tonight it was just simple pasta and meat sauce.
- 2-ish pounds of ground beef
- .75 pounds of Italian sausage
- 1 large onion, chopped
- Mushrooms, some
- Garlic, minced, lots
- Dried herbs (marjoram, oregano, basil, bay leaf)
- 2 28 oz cans tomatoes (one crushed w/ basil, one purée)
Brown meat over medium heat (about 30 minutes) and remove from pan. Soften onions, garlic and mushrooms in beef fat (add oil if dry). Return meat to pan. Mix and heat everything through. Add tomatoes. Heat 1 cup of water in microwave and add one beef bullion cube. Add dried herbs and cumin to liquid. Dump herb / bullion mix into pot. Add a couple grinds of pepper.
Stir everything well and let simmer for a while. We left it 2 1/2 hours or so.
It was a very, very yummy pasta sauce. My tummy is very happy.
